Quake ushered in the new era of shooter that is still essentially what we have now, whereas Doom in retrospect shares more in common with top-down 2D shooters. Of course we wouldn't have Quake without Doom, but technlogically Doom's engine was a dead-end. Ironically, I believe Daikatana was essentially supposed to be what Quake was intended to be, with a different theme though. Nah, Romero was pretty involved in Quake, it's just that its development was very troubled, so Romero's initial (much more ambitious) plan was scrapped and the more simplistic 'Doom-in-3D' formula was used instead. But I would specifically point out Ultrakill which is pulling a lot from Doom 2016. Really I think he is just talking about boomer shooters which are inline with movement shooters generally. I have some copy-pasta but this covers most of it. They're technically not first-person shooters, but rather first-person puzzle games of sorts where the player can go more at their own pace. Portal 1/2 would also be good games for her. You can't even look up or down in classic DOOM and Wolf 3D without mods or source ports. In addition, due to how all of these games work, auto-aim is very generous to the point where you only really need to turn towards the general direction of an enemy to hit them. Duke 3D would come later, but it isn't nearly as brutal as other Build engine games like Shadow Warrior and especially Blood. As the first two are some of the earliest FPS games, they're not overly complicated or difficult, at least on lower difficulties (and not counting any of their "episodes" past the third one). To answer your question, I would probably recommend to her Wolfenstein 3D, original 1993 DOOM, and Duke Nukem 3D. It also doesn't help that DOOM 2016 is downright unbalanced in the player's favor. That game is much faster-paced and demanding compared to its predecessor.
