This is a show that can thrive if characters are allowed to have smaller moments of humor and levity. There is so much potential to be had in the new Lethal Weapon - perhaps more than anyone is willing to admit. This Lethal Weapon needs to be more Bad Boys and less Shane Black. This Lethal Weapon needs to find ways to be the light-hearted, funny action series it can be. That Lethal Weapon (the first one in particular) was a singular story about a suicidal man finding reason to live. The title will help get eyeballs on day one, but this Lethal Weapon can’t be that Lethal Weapon. This is a Riggs that will build a fanbase if allowed to grow beyond the archetype setup nearly three decades ago.Īdditionally, this show has a chance to really be the buddy cop show Fastlane was in 2002 - but without being the money pit that show was. Particularly, in one scene during the pilot’s third act, Crawford’s performance while facing certain death is genuinely tear jerking. This Riggs is more subdued and emotional. Clayne Crawford’s Riggs doesn’t have the manic flares Mel Gibson brought to the role in ‘87. Where the pilot shines is in its take on the characters, particularly when it comes to Riggs. Murtaugh is still old, but in denial about being “too old for this s**t.” These little flairs are the things that will ultimately aid in the future, but sadly make the show feel like a cheap knock-off of something beloved in the first episode. Riggs is still suicidal, but not in the way he was in Shane Black’s classic film. Like Syfy’s 12 Monkeys, Lethal Weapon has taken the broad elements that make up a beloved property and added its own flares to make it into something that can grow outside known mythology. Luckily for Murtaugh, he is also very good at what he does.
